Future Physicians for Oklahoma (FPO) Program
June 5-June 20, 2017- Applications Due March 3, 2017.
Match will be done late March
This student externship program is designed for medical students who have completed their first year of medical school and who have an interest in family medicine, especially those who want to practice in rural areas. The FPO experience involves interaction with the physician within the community where the student is placed. Participating students spend the month of June with a physician preceptor. Each student receives a reimbursement at the conclusion of the program between $1,000-$2,000. The amount of reimbursement is dependent upon the city/community the student agrees to participate in.
Family & Community Medicine Interest Group (FCMIG)
The FCMIG is the student interest group at the OU-COM. The Foundation works with the FCMIG to plan a series of activities throughout the year. These include blood drives, skills clinics, a residency fair, volunteer clinics, and monthly speaker series luncheons.
The Malcom E. Phelps Family Medicine Award
Presented to the graduating student who has demonstrated consistent sensitivity to the ideals of family medicine throughout medical school. Sponsored by the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, the Oklahoma Academy of Family Physicians (OAFP) and the Family Health Foundation of Oklahoma (FHFO) In honor of Malcom E. Phelps, MD of El Reno Oklahoma. Dr. Phelps is recognize as one of the founder of the American Academy of Family Physicians while he was serving as President of the Oklahoma Academy in 1947. He then founded the now named American Academy of Family Physicians during his tenure as the AAFP President in 1957.
